Spring 2021
Trend Forecasting

Lindsey predicts:

Brandon Maxwell, Dion Lee, and Proenza Schouler

Like the rest of 2020, this year’s Fashion Month was filled with lots of firsts.  While some designers were able to pull off socially distanced runway shows, many did not, and this led to a new world of digital enterprises.  Live streamed shows, digital presentations, and runway look books proved designers could successfully adapt to a new normal.

I don’t know about all of you, but I am excited about the trends and pieces we will be wearing post-quarantine

Burberry
Altuzarra
The Row

The classics

Let’s begin with the classics, because let’s be honest, we all want a little consistency right now.  The timeless trench coat was seen throughout many shows, but with modern updates. I personally loved Burberry’s fresh take on leather details, and the fashion forward sleeves showcased at Altuzarra.  The trench coat will be your spring go-to outwear, especially if you’re not ready to part ways with your sweatsuit, and will instantly elevate your look.  When you’re ready to dress up again, I love it styled with pantsuits a la Victoria Beckham or minimalistic over mini dresses and clogs at Hermes.

Another everlasting staple, the oversized button down, and this time it’s not borrowed from the men in our lives.  The Row’s entire show was filled with XXL button downs, showing us that oversized never looked so chic.  Especially paired back to belted trousers and monochrome looks.  Prada featured the trend as well with the most gorgeous pastel colors which screams spring! Valentino brought the trend to new measures with gorgeous lace fabrics and the pop of pink we never knew we needed.

When you’re ready to give up your sweatpants
(if only for an hour)

Get the best of both worlds with this season’s oversized jeans; equal parts comfortable and cool.  Victoria Beckham had us all in mind when designing her trouser denim.  Styled with a tee shirt or a billowy top you're destined to look effortless.  Look to Valentino for an elevated pair with flare (quite literally), perfect for the girly blouses, and Chloe for a bohemian style with the right amount of edge.

Bold shoulders and 80’s glam

I love a good shoulder moment more than the next girl, and this season did not disappoint.  The bold shoulder popped up on many runways and it’s all very exciting.  Balmain went full on 80’s with denim, glitter and glam, while Khaite stayed true to her cool girl aesthetic with poplin fabrics.  This category wouldn’t be complete without the mention of Isabel Marant, as she kept it edgy with sequins and leather while staying true to her boho identity.

This trend doesn’t sound great on paper, but here we go.  Netting was seen in various forms at Fashion Month.  Think of it like an accessory your outfit isn’t complete without.  David Koma gave us glam with sparkly nets layered over dresses.  Ports 1961 showed up like a bohemian goddess with net dresses and gladiators sandals.

Spring has gone Boho

Spring 2021 is giving us a new version of showing skin and I’m not talking about the crop tops all the young girls are wearing.  The rediscovered cut out style is modern and fresh.  Let’s take a cue from Gabriela Hearst, known for her longer hemlines and luxe knits, who incorporated the trend with such sophistication and elegance we have no choice but to be on board.  Dion Lee also took a stab at the trend, which has edgy cool girls everywhere swooning.

Bohemian is a trend that has become more of a lifestyle than anything else.  Nonetheless fashion wants you to let our your inner boho goddess and have fun this season.  Alberta Ferretti, Christian Dior, Etro and Isabel Marant are on the forefront of bohemian fashion.  Christian Dior taught us a lesson in layering and mixing prints this season.  The fabrics and embroidery were truly special as well.

Belts on belts

I will end on accessories, but there is only one you need: the belt.  We saw belts dominate the runways more than ever.  I loved the look cinched over coats and dresses, worn with our favorite shirtdress trend, and of course the high waisted trouser.  The belt is the hero piece of the season, sure to elevate your look and be the styling piece you won’t feel complete without.
